Feature Spotlight: Respondent Feedback Loop


We are excited to announce one of our latest feature enhancements, the Respondent Feedback Loop. With this tool, you are able to send automated, customized follow-up emails based on criteria from survey responses. It is a great function that sends respondents a personalized email from the survey they completed based on any criteria that you want. As many of our loyal customers, friends and other followers may know, we were an early adopter and one of the first to develop an online survey software platform. Today, almost everyone has opted to "go digital" and we have seen drastic changes to today's business landscape. So many things are different than they once were when we started in a garage just outside of Seattle back in 2002. There have been many new, disruptive competitive products in the most recent years and many of our former competitors have been run out of business.

After spending years both serving and listening to many industries about what they need to be more efficient - Survey Analytics as an organization has taken the direction to continue adding value and innovative ways of collecting information. The ABCs of Life Before Computers

With how caught up we all are in our technology, sometimes it's hard to believe that humanity managed itself just fine and dandy without computers. Believe it or not, once upon a time - (and some of you may very well remember) people organized, communicated and improved upon all aspects of their lives without using computers. School assignments could be completed without Wikipedia or Google and people used to hang out and look at each other, not sit around in a room together and pay attention to nothing but their smartphones.

So, what was life really like before computers? For one, many companies out there just like us wouldn't even exist without them. We understand that we are unqualified to specifically recreate how life really was before computers. But, just for fun, we have put together the ABCs of Life Before Computers. Below you will see 26 technical words beginning with each letter of the alphabet, and what those words meant back before the average person knew what a computer was or the mainstream adoption of technology into our lives. Feel free to leave other terms and suggestions to include in the comments and - enjoy!

Begin: The ABCs of Life Before Computers


  • Applications were something filled out for employment.
  • Backup was something you did in your car while leaving your house.
  • Cache was only known as the French word for cover.
  • Driver was a golf club, or a person driving a car.
  • Export was a form of international trade.
  • Files were something you found in a steel cabinet.
  • Graphics were only made by mathematicians and engineers.
  • Heartbleed meant you better get to the hospital.
  • IM was a grammatical error when someone forgot the apostrophe in I'm.
  • Java was found in your coffee mug.
  • Keyboards were better known as pianos.
  • Links were loops in a chain.
  • Macintosh was a delicious kind of apple.
  • Networking could only be done in person, by mail or phone.
  • Outbox was where your waiting to be mailed letters were stored.
  • Password was a secret code word to get into the treehouse.
  • Queue was a line of people that were waiting for something.
  • Ripping only happened to your clothes and fabrics.
  • Sessions were dedicated to therapy or counseling.
  • Terminals were where you caught the train or boarded a flight.
  • Utilities were things that you found useful.
  • Variables were symbols for numbers we didn't know yet.
  • Web was the place where spiders lived.
  • Yahoo was a rude, noisy or crazy person.
  • Xerox only copied in black and white.
  • Zip was something you did to keep your pants on.

Re-Define the Buzzword: Innovation


Innovation is simply defined on Wikipedia as finding a better way of doing something. But what's lacking from that definition is the fact that it must also be something original and new. A lot of companies nowadays claim that what they're doing is "innovative, groundbreaking, there is nothing else quite like it, and we are going to change the world". Much like this hilarious scene from the new TV show Silicon Valley.

The truth is that the market is oversaturated. And in this day and age it is becoming harder to be genuinely unique. So how do you stand out in a world full of so-called cutting-edge leaders? You need to stop saying what you think people want to hear and start thinking outside the box. Today we're talking about what it truly means to be innovative and offering some words to use instead.

Top 5 Infographics of the Week: Overused Buzzwords

While some buzzwords actually have meaning and carry weight, most buzzwords are just fluffy language that people use to make themselves sound smart (when in reality they have no idea what they are saying). There has also been an explosion of business buzzwords in 2013, which some of these infographics go into greater detail on.

You also may have seen on our blog that we have been talking about specific business buzzwords that are vastly overused, incorrectly used, or we're just plain sick of hearing. Two weeks ago was on "Big Data", last week was on "Engagement" and look out tomorrow for the post about "Innovation". Engagement is not only something we experience before getting married, but it's something that every marketer and business as a whole would like to improve upon. Whether it is users, employees, customers, blog readers or on social media - engagement is another buzzword thrown out there and often used out of context. Engagement for businesses starts with someone being interested, evolves with them remaining attentive and the end goal of any engagement strategy is action. So if we were to relate this to our personal lives, engagement starts with being attracted to someone else, evolves with enjoyment and ends with love.

10 Reasons Why The Survey Analytics Team is a Bunch of Geeks


Happy Friday, everyone! It's always fun to look back at the past and get our hands on a new opportunity to write the next chapter of our story. Earlier this week, the awesome team over at SingleHop, a company that offers private enterprise clouds and also has an awesome blog told us that this Sunday, July 13th, is a day to celebrate all things geeky! That’s right, this Sunday is Geekness Day. And there is no better time to put your geeky qualities front and center as we head into the weekend. SingleHop has a very cool social media campaign running with the hashtag #SingleHopGeeks and we couldn’t help but take part. We aren't the only ones celebrating either - with the 2014 International Comic-Con just around the corner later this month in San Diego.

Besides being a part of the monthly Geekwire 200 list and working with some awesome clients in the gaming industry like Zynga and High5Games, there is a lot more that makes Survey Analytics tried and true geeks at heart. June 2014 Monthly Recap with Survey Analytics



Summer is here and in full fledge! Although we may be out taking our vacations and having some summer fun, it didn't stop the earth or our business from turning out another great month. This is the fourth edition of the Survey Analytics monthly recap, a segment we added to the blog back a few months back in March. Let's get right to it and cover some things that happened this month with Survey Analytics in the news, in terms of events, product updates, new partnerships and more!

Happening right here on this blog all of last month was the Business Blog Challenge which we just completed and updated to reflect 30 great links to the 30 great topics we wrote about on our very blog over the course of June! If you are involved in blogging or know who blogs for your company, we encourage you to take it too! Plus there is a $50 Amazon gift card waiting for you if you successfully complete it. This was inspired to give SMB business blogs an opportunity to become better at writing blog posts (and suck a little less). The results we achieved in terms of traffic, subscriptions and increased engagement are incredible. See where we stood at Day 15 and the overall progress at Day 30.

In the news we were featured in Survey Magazine's "Research a Company" segment where they were so kind to share some insight into our corporate culture and company history. The story ran both online in the Market Research Bulletin and in their print magazine in mid June. We started a fun segment on our YouTube channel with our friends at qSample called "We Love Surveys, Data and Stats" where we aim to share two fun infographic style videos per month about surveys we are running and some other trending topics. The two videos from this month are on how much money Americans spent to travel to the FIFA World Cup in Brazil (it's a big bummer we got knocked out yesterday) and a summary of our technology results from last month with one of our customers, mindsight. Speaking of news, we are also currently looking for a Public Relations Manager to work with the fun and vibrant team in the Cincinnati, OH office.



Some product release updates happened this month in our bi-weekly product release schedule as we released Survey Analytics version 4.8 on June 6th, 2014 and Survey Analytics version 4.9 on June 20th, 2014. Some of the latest enhancements in our software include an exciting weighting and balancing enhancement, discrete choice conjoint is now supported in SurveyPocket (our offline mobile field survey tool), we improved the way you can import flat files and made it easier for you to setup custom dashboard reporting.

We attended a great event called gSummit in San Francisco where we got to meet all kinds of great folks involved in user engagement, employee engagement and well (obviously) gamification! Listen below to a podcast that Clark Buckner of TechnologyAdvice was so kind to record while speaking to our VP of Sales and Business Development Gretchen Lohman. We also got along and hit it off so well that we formed a new and exciting partnership with TechnologyAdvice that we will be announcing more details on soon!




Some features we put the spotlight on this month are on how to do advanced piping as a follow up to piping 101 a few weeks prior. These posts include when to use piping and how to administrate it in our software with some great examples. Another feature we touched base and put the spotlight on is how to setup conjoint analysis in Survey Analytics as a follow up to our Beginner's Guide to Conjoint Analysis last month (+ a fun infographic) to visually learn about the methodology! We also had a great education hour session with some of the Survey Analytics Customer Success Team. Our VP of Client Services Esther LaVielle and Chief Growth Officer John Johnson showed our panel management software inside and out and answered some of the most frequently asked questions.

Business Blog Challenge Progress Report: Final

Today marks the 1st of July, which means our Business Blog Challenge that ran for the duration of June is complete! At the halfway point, we posted a Progress Report on June 15th that you can check out here. Even at the halfway mark, we experienced phenomenal success. Now that we have finished the whole thing, we wanted to share an updated progress report with the full results from the month. Keep reading to see the stats and the updated infographic!

Here are the updated statistics:
  • 41% increase in overall blog traffic (via Google Analytics)
  • 340% increase in blog subscriptions (via Hubspot)
  • 27% increase in social shares (via ShareThis)
  • 18% increase in returning visitors (via Google Analytics)
  • 51% increase in links and referrals (via Hubspot)

It's pretty clear to see that our Business Blog Challenge performed very well as we experienced remarkable success. It wasn't hard either!
