March 2014 Monthly Recap with Survey Analytics


March of 2014 was an exciting month at Survey Analytics. This past month we announced our new Product Manager Anup Surendran and we are happy to have him on board with the Survey Analytics team. We wanted to take a moment to recap our top stories, events, product news and interviews from March.

In the news, our St. Patrick's Day survey was a huge success and was featured on the front page of USA Today as the data snapshot on 3.17.14. Data from the 2014 St. Patricks Day survey was picked up in 300+ publications to date. On March 26th, we presented how we pulled the study off in just 10 days, showcased the results and provided educational materials for multi-channel research in a webinar titled "How to Develop a Multi-Channel Research Strategy."Just this past week we found out we made the Geekwire 200 Seattle Startup Leaderboard and you can learn more about what this means here.



Some events we were involved with...Our VP of Sales and Business Development Gretchen Lohman and Chief Growth Officer John Johnson attended the first GUR (Game User Research) Summit SIG in San Francisco and had nothing but great things to say about the event. It was nice to catch up with a couple of our present gaming clients, hear about the research methodologies technologies used by some of the most cutting edge gaming companies in the world. Also this March, Survey Analytics CEO Andrew Jeavons presented a great session on Mobile Survey Technology at FedCASIC along with a real life use case scenario with OutSmart Flu project leader Dr. Ajay Sethi of UW Madison. We were excited to get the inside scoop on how the OutSmart Flu app performed this past year. The white labeled panel application was designed by us and tailored to the needs of Ajay and his team for crowdsourcing flu trends on the UW Madison campus.

Some features in Survey Analytics we covered include the new look and feel for logic and mobile supported question types. We spotlighted cross tabulations and how easy they are to setup on our platform. If you use Survey Analytics for employee surveys, 360 surveys or internal employee satisfaction you should definitely check out our newest product FlashLet. FlashLet aims to revolutionize employee feedback and communication streams between leadership, managers and all employees within organizations. We also have upgraded our platform to bootstrap3 and will tell you this upcoming week about the positive things this brings forward to your user experience moving forward. We have received both positive and more on the neutral to negative side of what we have rolled out so far. We are working on it!

Taking a look into the future and popular technology - we had a chance to interview our President Vivek Bhaskaran on a few topics this month to talk about the past, the present and the future. The first item we covered is the future of WhatsApp and the possibility for it being a channel for businesses to interact with consumers. We also chatted with Vivek about mobile adoption and the "Internet of Things" in Market Research to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the World Wide Web.

Top 5 Infographics of the Week: The State of LinkedIn

Just last week, the world's most popular professional network rolled out its brand new publisher platform, starting with a test group of 25,000 users. Right now, if you want access, you will have to fill out a form before it is released to their base of 277 million users. According to LinkedIn, this new publisher platform will give users the ability to share longer posts about their expertise and professional interests, in addition to sharing shorter "status updates". The strategic move by LinkedIn basically means they're providing an amped up blogging tool for people to engage directly with their connections - instead of just being a place to rest your résumé. So far the publisher platform has gotten mixed reviews. Survey Analytics Makes the Geekwire 200 Seattle Startup Leaderboard List


We are excited to announce today that Survey Analytics was ranked #84 on the Geekwire 200 (Seattle's Startup Leaderboard) for March 2014. The Geekwire 200 rankings are determined using an algorithm that calculates company public data including employee numbers, social media stats and inbound links to each company's website. The Geekwire 200 companies are drawn from the GeekWire startup list - which is a list of more than 700 tech focused startups in the Pacific Northwest region. In Geekwire 200 index, you can filter by company type and sort rankings by specific values.

MozTrust is a measurement of link trust, not popularity. Having links to your site from highly trusted and credible institutions such as universities or the government help rank you on a higher scale of trust. MozTrust is calculated by an algorithm developed by Yahoo engineers similar to trust algorithms used by Google and Bing engineers. A lot of Survey Analytics company growth and the connections we have made have come organically. You won't catch us posting links in random blog comments and forums just to have a link to our site. These are bad for your MozTrust scores. Have you ever heard the quote...people do business with who they like and who they know? MozTrust scoring works off of the same concept and is important in today's SEO (adhering to the latest algorithims).

An Experiment with Social Polling: March Madness and Employee Engagement

This month there has been a lot of talk around whether March Madness in the workplace is demonstrating a form of employee engagement or employee distraction. There is a lot of controversy as to whether March Madness results in a huge loss in employee productivity or as a great workplace morale booster that carries on through the spring. On this past Monday, we set up a quick poll to gauge how many offices in the U.S. are holding March Madness competitions and if employees think it is a form of engagement or distraction in the workplace. The poll ran for 24 hours and was just two questions. Poll respondents were recruited and targeted through social media advertising on Facebook and Twitter. We spent just $50.00 total in advertising and outreach costs and we received 210 poll completions. Feature Spotlight: Cross Tabulation


In today's Feature Spotlight we are focusing on the cross tabulation feature in Survey Analytics. Cross tabulations are a mainstay in the market research industry and is one of the most widely-used statistical tools. Cross tabs are an important statistical process that summarizes two or more variables of categorical data into a contingency table. They provide a basic picture of the relationship between two variables and are useful when showing a side-by-side comparison of various survey questions. Here we will go over what cross tabs are used for, how to set them up, and what the output will look like.

In 2007, the Mobile App store was nonexistent. Fast forward to 2014 and there are more than 1.5 million apps available for download between the Apple App Store and Google Play. As the base of mobile users grows worldwide, so do the demands of app users. Not only do we have high expectations in terms of functionality and service, but our attention spans are quickly waning. In fact, 5 seconds is the maximum time a mobile user will wait for an app or website to load before they leave or visit a competitors website.

Mobile is Here to Stay

Mobile is now bigger than ever - both in its reach and its continuing adoption. As smartphones become cheaper and more widespread, more and more companies have declared their strategies to go mobile. Despite this huge surge in mobile traffic over the past few years, 45% of businesses still do not have a mobile-optimized website or app. 2013 was named "the year of mobile", but so was 2012, 2011, 2010 and so on. Instead, 2014 has been renamed the "NEW age of mobile".

This new age of mobile encompasses many different things. What does it mean to your audience if you are not pursuing a mobile strategy? And what is meant exactly by the term "mobile strategy"? Q&A With Vivek Bhaskaran on Mobile Adoption and the "Internet of Things" applied to Market Research

Just one week ago was "WWW Wednesday," marking the 25th anniversary of the World Wide Web. The original proposal of the World Wide Web 25 years ago on March 12, 1989 by Berners-Lee titled "Information Management" has now evolved and taken over many aspects in our daily lives. 

Without the World Wide Web, SaaS like us and millions of others would not be here today. This week I took a chance to ask Survey Analytics President Vivek Bhaskaran questions about the current state of mobile adoption in market research and new insights the "Internet of Things" and connected world have opened up to us and the market research industry over the recent years. 

Feature Spotlight: Mobile Supported Survey Question Types and Logic


Today's Feature Spotlight is highlighting the mobile supported survey question types and logic in Survey Analytics. When sending surveys, it is important to double check and make sure you are using the right question types for optimal display across all platforms. Some of the popularly used survey question types on the web do not display properly in the mobile environment. The user experience on mobile is very different from traditional and still commonly used online based surveys. All surveys that work in web browsers will work in a mobile browser - but ask if it will be a user friendly mobile experience before sending out your next survey. A 2013 study from Greenbook released that 19% of all online surveys are taken from mobile devices. One of our clients, Sponge it, has reported that nearly 60% of their overall survey responses came from mobile devices in 2013.

This weekend was an eventful time for the Survey Analytics Team! From Seattle to Cincinnati, St. Patrick's Day was in full swing with green beer, parades, and celebrations all around. Although many of us have a busy week full of events and traveling, a few of us got to get out and enjoy nice weather and celebrate with a few drinks and memories.

According to zmag, the average connected consumer is a 40 year old female who earns around $63,000 a year and owns several internet-connected devices. Today, consumers of all ages and lifestyles are connected to the brands and businesses they love via multiple screens and devices. In fact, 90% of all media interactions today are screen-based. This has many implications, especially for online shopping, customer service, and the nature of communication in general. Feature Spotlight: Enhanced Logic

Logic is a critical part of any survey if you want to create an intelligent questionnaire for your respondents. There are many reasons why you would want to employ logic; the main reason being if you have questions that do not apply to all respondents. For example, if someone selects an option that says they do not have kids, then you would not want to ask them the ages of their children later on. Essentially, logic ensures that only relevant questions are displayed to the appropriate respondents - thus making the survey more effective and efficient.

  1. You have a well defined objective and know exactly what you want to find out from your research efforts 
  2. You have a sound strategy and channel in place to build, acquire sample or reach your desired target audience 
  3. Use all internal and external resources to pre-recruit, build your own community, or purchase the right sample
  4. You have the appropriate tools to view, analyze and draw conclusions from the data you collect 
  5. Make sure your surveys are user friendly and are optimized for all common used devices (online and mobile) 
  6. Timeline! Research can be a coordinated effort and you want to make sure you reach your delivery date start to end 
  7. Plan for a survey review and not just your eyes-only. Allow team collaboration to double check before deploying.

St. Patrick's Day 2014 Survey


As St. Patrick's day draws near, we are excited to share with you the results of our 2014 St. Patrick's Day survey. We got input from nearly 3,000 people and the final data presented is based on the completed surveys of 1,337 Americans. We asked them questions about their plans to celebrate, what they like to drink on the holiday, and even if they will attempt an Irish accent. Participants came from 47 different states, were both male and female, and have varying levels of education.

We went about finding respondents a few different ways; first we set up targeted social media ads through Facebook and Twitter. Then we visited a local brewery in Cincinnati called Rhinegeist and conducted field interviews by using iPads loaded with SurveyPocket. There we were able to collect about 50 responses live. We also used a general US population sample courtesy of qSample. Check out the infographic below with a highlight of some of the best results!

The recent Facebook $19 billion acquisition of the WhatsApp messaging service has stunned the tech world. It's nothing new that many businesses are after big data and creating engaging, personalized, yet trustworthy user experiences. The 450 million and growing users of WhatsApp rises challenging questions to what Facebook will do to monetize all of this new acquired data. In 2013 we learned that big data is a trending topic and buzzword, but nobody has quite figured out the analysis part of big data. Q&A with Our New Product Manager and Solution Architect - Anup Surendran


Q1: Tell me little bit about your background – where are you from? Education?

Cloud Solution Architect and Product Manager - Anup SurendranAnup: I lived and worked in an amazing country - Canada - for 13 years. After university, I worked at on a Plantation Workforce Management Solution in Malaysia for a year. Unilever has one of the largest palm oil plantation in Malaysia and a large external workforce. This was the door opener for me into the technology space. In Canada, my first startup was Camilion. I worked in a basement for about a year before the company moved into a real office. Here I started my first experience as a Solution Architect providing solution to all the major insurance companies (AIG, AXA, Lyons) and created risk management and policy management integration and solutions. It was an exhausting job with a lot of travel required, but it was exciting because I helped scaling the talent, processes and helped grow the company at a very fast rate.  After that I moved to another startup providing Solution Architecture services to Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and some well recognized Investment Banks.

The work culture was very intense but I learned a lot - they expect you to work hard. I was dealing with a lot of "what if" scenarios.

Feature Spotlight: Automated Text Tagging


In today's Feature Spotlight we are going to highlight on the text tagging tool in Survey Analytics. This can be used to analyze open-ended text responses to help categorize and quantify responses based on predetermined labels that you define. Also known as text analysis clustering or text mining -  this feature can quickly automate text tagging options by setting up your own keywords or tags. Instead of having to go and manually tag options in your open-ended text responses, we will do it for you!
